Come Fly With Us - Travel Themed Books Review

Come Fly With Us - Travel Themed Books Review

We have a nightly ritual with our 3-year old that includes reading 3 books each night. She gets a choice from her collection and we have some time together to wind down. Recently, we were sent three books written by Captain Rob Johnson who writes books about two pilots - Pilot Ollie and Pilot Polly.

His level of detail is awesome because you can adjust it based on age - for a 3-year-old we skipped some detail but the overall information was really good. "Come Fly With Us" was especially a hit because it goes over the full process of what a pilot, crew, and airport staff do in preparation and during flight. It's a really great book to read to prepare a child if you plan on flying or if they are just learning about modes of transport. At 3, my daughter, who already flown to 3 counties, was able to grasp most of the content. An older child would really be engrossed in the parts about plane computers and controls.

The other two books touch on both the process and preparation to fly as well as the destination itself. We read "Amazing Adventures of Rome" and another about New York. Like a kid-friendly travel guide, they talked about food (pizza and gelato in Rome), attractions (Coliseum and Empire State Building), as well as other things to do. So definitely pick up these books if you are traveling with kids especially to these particular cities.

Each book also has a scavenger hunt for a particular item which is fun and gives the child one more thing to do. The books are pretty small and light so they can easily be packed in a carry-on as onboard entertainment. For more tips and tricks to occupy 3+ child - click here.

These books are available on Kindle with illustrations.

On their site, they also have free downloads with activities related to the books for free! http://www.planecharacters.com/downloads

How To Keep Your Kids Entertained During Travel

How To Keep Your Kids Entertained During Travel

We’re gearing up for another trip and my little one is now 2 and a half so we need to bump up our entertainment kit for her. I’ve been on the hunt for activities that are mess free, not too heavy to carry and actually interesting. Some of these items we got specifically for train rides, car rides, doctor’s visits and restaurants.

Below is a quick list:

Water Wow On The Go– there are different types – some require water and a brush, others have this really cool “pen”. You fill the tube with water and it doesn’t leak, water comes out and wets the attached brush. There are four “boards” to paint with water. When they dry, you can paint again and again. Really neat. We have a few for pure fun (butterflies) and a few for learning (ABC, Shapes, 123).

Melissa & Doug On The Go Water Wow! Fairy Tale: http://amzn.to/29vOwly

Magnetic Tins – these are amazing! All of the pieces are magnetic and the tin itself is metal so everything sticks to it, nothing flies all over the place and there are multiple scenes for about 30-60 minutes of fun.
Magnetic Fun - Cars Planes and Trains: http://amzn.to/29vOp9v
Magnetic Fun - Mickey Mouse Magnetic Zoo: http://amzn.to/29JjKoe
Magnetic Paper Dolls Travel Tin - The Little Mermaid: http://amzn.to/29Cc03I
Magnetic Paper Dolls Travel Tin – Cinderella: http://amzn.to/2a9EOCo

Sticker Books – We have all kinds of sticker books at home which are too large for travel so I wanted something small to fit into her little backpack and found these. They are not that cheap but they are small and light, have multiple scenes and keep her entertained
Pet Shop Activity Sticker book: http://amzn.to/29PZsIZ
Petting Zoo Activity Sticker book: http://amzn.to/2a9FSGp

Drawing - We’ve discovered Melissa & Doug’s magic pen and paper. There are two versions. One type reveals all colors with just one pen which I like better for airplane rather than the 4 markers version. My daughter prefers the 4 markers one so we use it during where we have a bit more elbow room rather than maneuvering an airplane seat to pick the markers up off the floor in case one of the four rolls off the table.

Melissa & Doug ColorBlast: http://amzn.to/29vOwSo

Triangular Crayons – we use the below-mentioned travel packs – they are amazing, pop one in the bag and you have stickers, a coloring book and crayons, all in a resealable bag. I do replace the crayons provided with a small pack of triangular crayons so they don’t roll off the table

I’m also adding a few wipe clean activity books and taking our Doodle Board. We have a medium sized one from fisher price.

How To Pack Your Diaper Bag With Essentials For Travel

Diaper Bag Essentials for Traveling with Infant, Toddler, and Preschooler

Did you ever have that one day that you thought you have everything you need in your diaper bag and then realized that ONE thing that would have been so helpful is not there?

Broken out into three categories: Infant, Toddler and Preschooler are what I’ve had in my diaper bag throughout the years.

Newborn/Infant Diaper Bag:

1+ Toddler Diaper Bag:

2+ Preschooler Diaper Bag:

  • Everything in the toddler bag +
  • Wet bag or Zip Locks for accidents: http://amzn.to/29OLoOJ
  • Extra underwear if potty training - because accidents will happen
  • Change of clothes for said accidents
  • Toilet seat covers: http://amzn.to/29ies47
  • Travel Potty: http://amzn.to/29hMyAb
  • Travel Toilet Adapter: http://amzn.to/29wU1kL
    • it's bulky but it doesn’t pinch or slide around. Worth the extra tote bag!
  • On the Go WOW - color with water: http://amzn.to/29qIkdr
    • this is such a brilliant idea. You fill the drawing pen with water so there’s no mess, water makes the color appear. Then it dries black and white and you start all over again.
  • Grab and Go activity pack: http://amzn.to/295wGpm
    • I always have at least one in my diaper bag. Not every place gives a child crayons and a coloring book so I always keep this handy to occupy my little one. Doctor visit, restaurant, anywhere really.

What To Pack For Vacation With An Infant

What To Pack For Vacation For a Child Under 1

In the past two years, our daughter has traveled 4 states and 2 countries. We love traveling and within reason, we bring our kiddo along.

A lot of parents have recently inquired about what to bring for a child under 1 years of age. Some of the items, I still bring with me for my 2 year old but most of the below items were extremely useful when she was an infant/toddler.

Feeding gadgets:

Water Bottle Adapter
: http://amzn.to/24u9N1H or http://amzn.to/21qe6ZS
The last thing I wanted to do on vacation is wash a million bottles. These really helped when we needed a quick snack/meal. NOTE: The flow is pretty strong similar to fast slow nipples

Baby Buddy Secure-A-Toy: http://amzn.to/1rdfh26

Sippygrip: http://amzn.to/1rqZahI
With a million little toys, restaurant and airplane trips became a constant battle. These holders attach to anything: chairs, stroller, high chair, your bag, your wrist – you get the idea.
The key difference is that the Sippygrip has a very strong rubber that holds toys without handles. Get both! You’ll thank me later.

Pouch Buddy: http://amzn.to/1TfIfF1
I can’t say enough about this amazing contraption. My little one loves veggie pouches. This adapts to any pouch, including reusable for homemade food. No more little squirts and messes.

Thermos Sippy Cup: http://amzn.to/1SGjVjN
Love this! We have it and the thermos straw bottle. It’s perfect in hot and cold weather, especially at the beach when sippy cups warm up extremely quickly

Munchkin Click Lock Weighted Flexi Straw Trainer Cup: http://amzn.to/1VH4URh
Very light, no spill and the straw folds inwards which makes it awesome for all kids of outdoor activities

Disposable Bibs: http://amzn.to/1SIGVLy
I don’t want to clean on vacation or road trips, disposable bibs are the best

aden + anais Bibs: http://amzn.to/24udT9S
That said, there are a few bibs that are worth washing than ruining that super adorable top. Get this one, full coverage, including shoulders and super soft to wipe away the mess

Disposable Place mats: http://amzn.to/1UszI75
I’ve never been a germaphobe but when kids put everything in their mouths, these things are a life savior.

Inflatable High Chair: http://amzn.to/26La02s
I bought this when my daughter was already too old for it. It folds into a little tiny square. It’s perfect for under 1. Especially if you hate the high chairs at restaurants or know there won’t be any available.

Pool & Beach for Infants and Toddlers:
(Read Family Trip to DR - What To Pack for more tips and beach items)

Schylling Infant UV Playshade it’s a must – under 2lb and becomes huge. Like a little playhouse that’s protected from harmful rays, harsh sun and has ventilation: Infant Playshade An adult or two children can fit in comfortably. A perfect place to discreetly breastfeed too or put a baby down for a nap

Imse Vimse Water Shoes: http://amzn.to/1VH5RJf
Super cute and perfect for tiny feet. Keeps early walkers safe in the sand and the shoes float!

Swimways Baby Spring Float: http://amzn.to/1rr0Rfj
We used this only in the pool. The waves at the beach made me skeptical. It protects the baby from the sun and allows them to safely float and move their legs and arms. Folds flat.

iPlay Hat: http://amzn.to/1TfRvcl
I love these, full coverage hats!

Planes, Trains and Cars:

Entertainment on the go
Little ones love toys that make noise but those are usually huge and require a lot of luggage space. Below are some smaller toys that have multiple songs/variety of interaction. Save space and take these instead:
Baby Einstein Take Along Tunes Musical Toy: http://amzn.to/1TG37Zh
Bright Starts Take-Along Toy, Beaming Buggie: http://amzn.to/24uemc5
Kids Preferred Amazing Baby Blanket Teether Bear: http://amzn.to/1TfSfOs
Infantino Hug and Tug Musical Giraffe: http://amzn.to/1TG3vqA
The First Years Star Teething Blanket: http://amzn.to/24ug79o
Brica mirror: http://amzn.to/1SGqO4w
This mirror is traditionally used for the car, but you can bring it on an airplane and rest it while the baby listens to the sounds and changing lights. Very soothing. One of my daughter’s favorites.

Teethers can also be perfect – kids put everything in their mouths at this age. Below are the ones we loved:
Nuby Icybite Hard/Soft Teething Keys: http://amzn.to/1TfTDAH
Baby Banana Bendable Training Toothbrush, Infant: http://amzn.to/1SIKzFl
Toothbrush and teether in one. Perfect for when teeth are coming in so you can scratch those itchy gums

On the go
Ergo Baby Carrier: http://amzn.to/1WILBps
When traveling, especially on planes, I've noticed most parents use a carrier. It keeps their hands free, the baby is protected and safely with the parents and it makes navigating the airport easier especially when traveling with multiple kids
Brica Travel Bassinet http://amzn.to/1Uzemow
Perfect if you don't want to use that questionable pack and play or if you want to safely co-sleep
3 in 1 Bassinet/Diaper Bag: http://amzn.to/1W7XMgv
This is a real space savor! Use it as your diaper bag and changing table. When you arrive, the baby can sleep in it as well

Care Items

There are many care products available – below are the ones I use for my daughter wherever we go!
LureLux Natural Bug Repellent: http://amzn.to/1SIEwAt
Natural Hand Sanitizer Spray Original Scent: http://amzn.to/1TFZ2UU
Noodle & Boo Sunscreen: http://amzn.to/26L3zMO

Hope this helps plan and pack for the next vacation. Happy Summer!

Family Trip to DR - What To Pack For Kids

Family Trip to DR - What To Pack For Kids
A post contributed by my wife who does all of the packing for our trips ;)

We recently came back from our 2nd international beach trip with our toddler. A friend is now going with her 2 year old and as I started putting the list together for her of things to take along, I thought I’d share it with other parents who are probably scratching their heads at the multitude of options available and which ones to really splurge on. So, here goes. I’ve only included items we TRULY used on the trip. ...

2-In-1 Travel Potty & Trainer Seat

2-In-1 Travel Potty & Trainer Seat Review
via Smartertravel.com

Product Review: 2-In-1 Portable Potty & Trainer Seat
95 percent of the population is not going to see the phrase "a potty that fits in your diaper bag" as a pro, but for the five percent of people with recent and current potty-training kids, the possibility of always being ready to respond to the, ahem, needs of your young kid is a huge. Especially when you're somewhere unfamiliar or in a place where restrooms are scarce, having an instant option can transform travel with young kids.
